Recently at a special dinner of gratitude and praise for the leaders of the "Renegades of faith,"the men's ministry in our Church, I saw God at work very clearly in the lives of a few faithful men. Our leader called his board of directors forward to give them their due honors for a job well done throughout the year. As they stood before their piers, he called each by name and explained the job of each one, and how they had performed individually throughout the year. As he spoke, about each man, my thoughts ran immediately to Romans 12:4,5
“ Just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, so in Christ we who are many form one body and each member belongs to all the others.”
As these men stood there, and as the leader spoke, I couldn’t help but think of how the dinner, and all the programs throughout the year would have turned out if one individual tried to do the job of the other, or what might have been the result if four of them had sat derelict all year and one tried to take on the work of them all?
Too often this is the case in many Churches, groups and societies these days. Too often one or two men end up having to do all the work, even the tasks that they are not gifted to do. That is why an understanding of Romans 12 is so important. God made each one of these men unique and special, and gave them a special job to complete. Not one of them is any better than the other, but they each have their own specific task.
God made the bison in such a way that he is inclined to look down. He made the giraffe in such a way that he always looks up. How would it be if the bison had to live on the leaves of the tree, while the giraffe had the daily diet of grass? both of these animals were designed in such a way that they could get the proper nutrition for life. Their necks were made in order to perform specific tasks, and they manage to survive because they make proper use of the neck.
The same is true for these men as well. God made each one of us for a special task in his particular timing, each working within the body to accomplish the overall goal. No one is any better than the other but each has a job to complete within the body so that it functions smoothly. God grant us the grace to understand our part and our calling in your kingdom. Help us each to maneuver with that special measure of grace you give for our calling.
